Autoblog: Electric GreenGT Design Study Fortells the Future of LeMans

An environmentally green race car that actually looks good?

Autoblog: Electric GreenGT Design Study Fortells the Future of LeMans

No, this isn't a stunt car from the Speed Racer. This is in fact the GreenGT. An all electric LeMons prototype designed by Thomas Clavet. Could the GreenGT be the first all electric race car to participate in LeMans? If GreenGT gets its act together in time for the 2011 event, the Switzerland-based firm could be the first.

Penned by French designer Thomas Clavet, the GreenGT design study seeks to revolutionize the face of motorsport with an FIA-certified EV comprised of a carbon fiber chassis and a fiberglass body. In theory, a pair of 100 kW water-cooled electric motors are mated to a proprietary gearbox, sending a prodigious amount of grunt to a set of magnesium OZ wheels shod in race-spec slicks. How prodigious? According to the GreenGT, the closed-cockpit racer will churn out between 350 and 450 hp and a pavement punishing 1,475 lb-ft of torque up to 100 mph, then reduced to 590 lb-ft to aid high-speed traction. According to the company, the 1,895-pound would reach 60 mph in under four seconds and on to a top speed of 171 mph. Power is supposedly funneled to a duo of lithium-ion batteries through a set of solar panels, and in addition to bringing two GreenGTs to LeMans in 2011, the firm plans to produce 22 road-going models within the next three years. Ambitious? Check. Plausible? We'll see.

Hybrids Stage Entrance into Motorsports

The World's first F3 racer is made from sustainable materials traced back to carrots, potatoes, and soybeans. It runs on biodiesel.

Hybrids Stage Entrance into Motorsports

I think this is a novel idea that should be taken up by the worlds most popular racing competitions. The whole green movement is taking shape throughout the entire world, and it's finally finding it's place in pro motor sports. It's happening all over the scene, from a hybrid Toyota Camry running as a pace car for NASCAR or the Ethanol Burning Hybrid racing in Le Mans, green is in the air.

Hybridcars.com wrote an excellent article on the trends and upcoming previews of some of the new technologies and amazing cars coming out of the motorsports scene. F1 cars using new devices called KERS, or Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems. The idea is amazing. Think of it like a boost feature in a video game, it's capturing energy lost during brakes, and saving it for a "boost" in a strategic situation. Click on to read the rest of the article and see what the new movements for Hybrid cars will be.

F1 team announces plans for a Ferrari-rivalling road car business with new eco-friendly supercar

McLaren Announces Super Car

The eco-friendly or green craze is surely to catch up and be strong for the upcoming years.  It's going to be no surprise for the US government to keep working hard at pulling stricter regulations on vehicles.  But it's also nice to see plenty of other manufacturers and even race teams, such as McLaren, thinking outside the box.  This McLaren project may seem to be one hell of a super car, but they're keeping their mindset on green.  Full article and an additional photo available after the jump.

An interesting campaign to encourage new test drivers of the Honda Insight in the UK

Honda Top MPG Challenge

With the Insight's release in Europe, creative marketing has turned the UK-based dealerships into a competition.  In order to encourage test drives, UK-based dealerships are documenting MPG numbers until the end of April during those test drives.  It'll be interesting to see the claims coming from these dealerships once the competition is over at the end of April.
